Music is amazing. It has the power to make you feel a certain way or remember a certain moment. I’m an avid car singer, forever thinking I’m the next Britney as I sweep along the motorway. I use it to help me get through essay writing or rota making and I am happiest at a festival or dancing in a nightclub.
It was as I was singing in the car that I got the idea for this post. Music has always made me feel better and I’m sure for anyone reading this (if anyone does!) that there will be songs that inspire certain feelings or memories – no matter how silly.
So here are 5 songs that mean something to me;
1 – Somebody That I Used To Know – Gotye
I feel like I know all the words to this song. When I was going through a bad time with a guy (and then again years later with another!) , I really empathised with this song. There’s something about the powerful singing that helps me realise that one day, these people who hurt me, will one day just be ‘somebody that I used to know’.
2 – See you again – Wiz Khalifa
This song always makes me cry. Like every single time it plays. I always think of my Nanna and then I cry some more.
3 – What do you mean – Justin Bieber
As soon as this plays, I’m back in a field at VFest (pictured above), dancing with one of my best gals. It’s pouring down and there’s glitter all over my face. But as the rain pours, I’m laughing and I’m dancing. (That may have something to do with the fact we spend most the day drinking gin and eating halloumi…)
4. Shut Up and Dance – Walk The Moon
They played this song every day on our Contiki coach in Australia. So every time it plays, a lovely montage appears in my mind of all the things we did and before I know it, I’m back dancing on tables with some amazing people.
5. Turn me on – Kevin Lyttle
I feel like this was played in every nightclub I ever used to go too and definitely at pre drinks. I feel like I’m out out and I feel fabulous. Enough said.
(In fact I like this one so much, I’ve had to play it while I’m writing!)
Other sassy songs include; Me Too – Meghan Trainor
6. Earthquake -DJ Fresh V Diplo
Suddenly I’m 18 again and dancing in the canteen at work with one of my closest friends at the time. This used to be played in the youth centre all the time because it was in the charts. Me and my friend used to run across the centre to find each other when it came on just to dance with each other. Looking back it’s not even that good of a song…
It’s mad how much a simple song can fill your mind with so many memories.
I could probably write a list of millions of songs that mean something. From The Courteneers (who I only discovered because a guy I fancied in college used to wear their band t-shirt) to Red Hot Chili Peppers (a weekend in London that will stay with me for a long time). Pretty much all of the Burlesque film soundtrack and ABBA’s Dancing Queen. I could go on and on and on.
I’d love to hear some of the songs that mean something to you. But in the meantime I’m gonna go play an Amazon Music playlist as long as my arm, because all this music talk has started something!
